Enrile, older than first electronic TV, penicillin, scotch tape, helicopter, credit cards

He’s a centenarian! Presidential Legal Counsel, Secretary Juan Valentin Furagganan Ponce Enrile, is celebrating his 100th birthday today, Valentine’s Day too!

He may well be added in the Guinness Book of World Records for the only centenarian still working in government. According to Philstar, Enrile was a champion defender of the military and uniformed personnel (MUP) pension system. The MUP benefits more than 600,000 active and retired MUP and future generations, including their families.

Despite his age, Enrile retains his legal brilliance and mental sharpness that challenge young lawyers of today. His legal skills are unparalleled, well, except for the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, who’s considered a legal luminary.

Born on February 14, 1924, Enrile may as well be the first immortal in the Philippines. He’s also ahead of many things like:

  • Credit card, first bank card, Charg-It, invented in 1946 by John Biggins
  • Helicopter, first practical copter, VS-300, invented in 1939 designed by Igor Sikorsky
  • Penicillin, first true antibiotic discovered in 1928 by Alexander Fleming
  • Scotch Cellulose Tape, first introduced in 1930 by Richard Gurley Drew
  • Television, first all-electronic TV successfully demonstrated in 1927, invented by Philo Taylor Fransworth.

Enjoy the ₱100,000 centenarian cash gift sir Enrile! May you have more birthdays!
