New Instagram competitor launched: “Whee” by TikTok

TikTok is launching another app, “Whee,” following its recent photo-sharing app called Notes. Unlike Notes, which allows public sharing, Whee focuses on letting you share photos only with your close friends. This private space aims to encourage you to be yourself and share “life’s spontaneous moments” with your inner circle.

But wait, isn’t this similar to Notes? Yes, kind of. Notes allows sharing photos and text for a wider audience, similar to Instagram. It might be inspired by the success of Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese app with photo sharing and e-commerce features.

So why two photo apps? TikTok might have different goals for each. Whee caters to private sharing, while Notes might offer insights on user preferences through photo-text content. This could potentially be used for better ad targeting in the future.

Despite the strategic reasons, some might wonder if users need another photo app when giants like Instagram and Snapchat already exist. Only time will tell if TikTok can convince users to switch with “Whee.”
