All the tech in Tech Max.

All the “tech” in the all new Yamaha NMAX Tech Max

We usually don’t cover motorcycles here in Unbox Diaries, mainly because it’s outside our ballpark. However, there are some instances that tech and scoots converge, and this is definitely one of those instances.

When we saw the name “Tech Max” we knew we just had to feature it. So, enough chitchat, let’s dive right into it.

A short history…

The “Tech Max” moniker has already been around for a few years, starting in 2022, debuting with the Yamaha TMAX 560. It served as the highest-spec variant of the TMAX lineup, packed with a slew of tech-oriented features that assist the rider.

After seeing the success of the TMAX Tech Max, Yamaha then decided to share the Tech Max variation with the other scooters in the lineup. After the TMAX came the XMAX, and then finally we’re down to Yamaha’s most popular model here in the Philippines, the NMAX.

What is Tech Max?

Apart from being the designation for the most premium trim level of the MAX series, it also features advanced technological features that most motorcycles don’t have. Similar to how car brands pack the topmost variant with a lot of tech features like heated seats, a large infotainment system, a multi-point safety system, and a lot more.

While there are a lot of features that make up the Tech Max moniker, we’ll instead focus on the tech part. After all, we are a tech channel…

Display

Digital gauge clusters in motorcycles aren’t a new thing; in fact, almost every motorcycle, regardless of price point, has a digital gauge cluster. What sets the NMAX Tech Max apart is the full-color display with smartphone functionality.

Instead of buying and installing a phone mount, which opens up a new can of worms. You can now take advantage of Yamaha’s Y-Connect app to connect your phone directly to the gauge cluster, letting you see calls and messages and even control music without ever touching your phone.

There’s even a navigation feature that utilizes Garmin’s StreetCross app to give riders real-time directions, live traffic, live weather, and reported road hazards, all without taking your attention off the road.

Y-ECVT

Perhaps one of the most talked-about features of the Yamaha NMAX Tech Max is the Y-ECVT, or the Yamaha Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission. So what is Y-ECVT, and how does it differ from the standard CVT?

Conventional CVTs usually rely on mechanical components like rollers and belts to adjust gear ratios. Y-ECVTs, on the other hand, utilize electronic controls to modify the transmission’s gear ratios.

Each of these offers its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, since conventional CVTs rely on mechanical parts, they’re simpler and easier to work on. However, this could also be a disadvantage, as it’s susceptible to wear and tear and power loss if not maintained enough.

ECVTs, on the other hand, offer a much more efficient and smoother ride as the electronics handle all the power delivery. It also doesn’t have as many mechanical parts, leading to a decrease in wear and tear. However, the system is much more complex and expensive to fix if it breaks down.

Other features

There are a lot more features that we haven’t touched on in this article, but we’ll leave that for the motorcycle experts. These features include a keyless smart key system (although it’s already a must-have, especially at this price point), a Traction Control System, and Dual-Channel ABS, as well as premium touches like a maxi seat, gold accents, and LED lights.

We failed to mention one other advantage from the Y-ECVT that the NMAX Tech Max has, which is the three-level downshift control. This feature is especially useful for finer controls when engine braking or when climbing up steep roads.

Price

The Yamaha NMAX Tech Max has an SRP of ₱175,900, although the price may vary depending on the availability and dealership. While some may consider it a bit high given the engine displacement, we still think it’s a worthy choice if you’re someone who likes to drive the cutting edge.
