Google’s rolling out some seriously clever anti-theft features with Android 16, and they’re not just the usual “Find My Phone” kind of deal. This time, the updates are tapping into on-device AI and tighter biometric controls to make stealing your phone a lot less appealing—and breaking into it even harder.
AI-Powered Theft Detection Is Here
One of the coolest additions is the “Theft Detection Lock.” It uses AI to detect sketchy motion—like if someone snatches your phone and bolts. If that happens, the phone instantly locks itself, cutting off access before the thief even figures out how to swipe up.
It’s proactive security that kicks in the moment something feels off, without waiting for the user to react. A smart move, especially for crowded city environments where grab-and-go thefts are common.
Android 16 is also expanding Identity Check, a feature that first showed up on Pixels and select Samsung phones. Now, more Android devices will require biometric authentication (face or fingerprint) before you can change key security settings or access sensitive data—especially when you’re outside of your usual trusted locations.
No more quick SIM swaps or password resets for someone who happens to get their hands on your phone.
Extra Layers for Offline and Remote Locking
What if your phone’s offline or you’re nowhere near a laptop? Android 16 has that covered too. With Offline Device Lock, your phone will automatically lock itself if it stays offline for too long. And with Remote Lock, you can lock your device by simply entering your phone number—even if “Find My Device” isn’t an option.
These features are expected to roll out globally and will support phones running Android 10 and up, though they’ll come baked into Android 16 by default. To activate the new protection settings, just head to Settings > Google > Theft protection.
Just keep in mind—some of these tools aren’t on by default. You’ll need to turn them on manually to actually get the full protection.
Google’s taking a big step forward here. These aren’t just reactive tools—they’re smart, silent bodyguards built right into Android. And as our phones continue to hold more of our lives, that kind of thinking is long overdue.
