Google appears to be preparing its own take on Apple‘s contact-sharing feature, with a new Android tool called “Tap to Share” reportedly in development.
The feature is clearly inspired by NameDrop, which debuted with iOS 17. On iPhones, NameDrop allows users to share contact details and files by simply bringing two devices close together.
How Tap to Share woks
According to findings from Android Authority, Tap to Share will allow users to instantly share these following:
- Contact information
- Photos and videos
- Links
- Location data
The process is straightforward. Users need to unlock their phones, then overlap the top edges of two Android devices while both screens face upward. Once positioned correctly, the phones should remain together until a visual glow confirms the connection.
If that method doesn’t work, users can try placing the phones back-to-back. The requirement to overlap devices is tied to how NFC antennas are positioned, which varies across Android models.

Tap to Share relies on Near Field Communication (NFC) to function. On many Android devices, the NFC antenna is located near the camera module, which explains why aligning the phones closely is necessary for a successful connection.
For comparison, Apple has standardized NFC placement near the top edge of its iPhones from the iPhone 7 up to newer models making NameDrop interactions more consistent.
Possible Pixel-first rollout
While Google has not officially announced a release timeline, early indications suggest that Tap to Share could debut as a Pixel-exclusive feature before rolling out more widely across Android devices.
What to expect
If launched, Tap to Share would bring a more intuitive, gesture-based sharing system to Android, reducing reliance on menus and manual file transfers.
