Apple confirmed today that two senior executives will be leaving the company next year: Kate Adams, its General Counsel, and Lisa Jackson, the Vice President for Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives.
Kate Adams has served as Apple’s top lawyer since 2017. Her retirement is scheduled for late 2026. Lisa Jackson will leave her post in late January 2026 after many years of leading Apple’s environmental and social-policy efforts.
As part of the transition, Apple has appointed Jennifer Newstead, the former chief legal officer at Meta Platforms and a former U.S. Department of State legal adviser, to become Apple’s new General Counsel starting March 1, 2026.
Meanwhile, the company reorganizes internally. Government Affairs will shift under Adams’ oversight until her retirement, after which Newstead will take on a combined role covering both Legal and Government Affairs. Lisa Jackson’s environmental and policy duties will move to the oversight of the current COO, Sabih Khan.
What This Signals for Apple’s Strategy
This is not an isolated incident. In recent months, Apple has experienced significant turnover, from its AI leadership to design heads and now, legal and policy ranks.
The departure of Kate Adams and Lisa Jackson is particularly consequential because it affects how Apple navigates regulation, government relationships, privacy, environment, and rising global pressures on tech firms. Jackson, for example, has long been a public face for Apple’s climate goals and policy-side commitments.
Plugging these roles with new leadership, especially someone like Jennifer Newstead, with global regulatory and legal experience suggests Apple is bracing for more intense regulatory and geopolitical pressures ahead. That could mean sharpening its strategy for compliance, global expansion, or legal pushback in areas like privacy, data, and environment.
