Apple’s iOS 26 update had a mixed reception when it came out. While others lauded it for its new-ish design language and fluid motions, others were a bit disappointed with how it performed on iPhones, both new and old.
The first rollout had new iPhones struggling a bit, while older iPhones were plagued with temporary lag and quicker battery drain, probably due to the re-indexing that it had to do. Thankfully, Apple was quick to roll out updates that fixed those issues.
Now, we’re 6 months into iOS 26, and most of the major bugs and issues have already been fixed, except, of course, for the keyboard. However, relief may soon be within reach with the upcoming release of iOS 26.4.
What Was The Problem?
It’s not that the keyboard bugs all the time, it’s just that when you type with a bit of speed, a bug occurs wherein a character pops up but doesn’t register in the text itself. I use an iPhone 12, and it annoys the hell out of me, especially when I’m typing something very important.
Although the issue seems minimal, it’s one of those bugs that pile up and cause a bigger issue than it actually is.
Where’s The Fix?
In Apple’s own release notes for the upcoming iOS 26.4, the company explicitly stated an update designed to provide “improved keyboard accuracy when typing quickly.”
That seems to suggest that the bug is caused by latency issues that cause the keyboard to miss characters. And it isn’t just all talk, as early testers reported a noticeable improvement compared to earlier iterations of iOS 26.
Could You Get Away With A Third Party Keyboard?
The short answer is no. While Apple does allow using a third party keyboard like Gboard and SwiftKey, the experience leaves a lot to be desired. There have been numerous reports of stability issues or it straight up not appearing, leaving users stuck with the built-in Apple keyboard.
When Can We Get It?
There’s no exact date on when the iOS 26.4 update rolls out, but given that it’s already in the hands of testers, it means that we could see the update by next week.
