Apple’s photos app gains “Recovered” album to locate lost or damaged photos

Good news for iPhone and iPad users! Apple’s upcoming iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 updates will introduce a new “Recovered” album within the Photos app, according to 9to5Mac. This feature aims to help you locate lost or damaged photos and videos residing on your device.

Upon updating to iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, your device will automatically scan for recoverable media. If any are found, the Recovered album will appear within the Utilities section of the Photos app. This distinguishes it from the existing Recently Deleted album where photos reside for 30 days before permanent deletion.

It’s important to note that Apple hasn’t confirmed yet whether photos in the Recovered album will automatically delete after a certain period. We’ve reached out to Apple for clarification and will update this story if we receive a response.

The introduction of the Recovered album comes after Apple addressed a bug in iOS 17.5. This bug caused some users to see previously deleted photos resurfacing in their library. Apple classified it as a “rare issue” affecting “photos that experienced database corruption.”

Public betas for iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia became available on Monday, allowing users to explore these upcoming features firsthand.
