Beyond the Hardware: Unlocking the Full Potential of the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro

Floating in a semi-circle around the phone are 3D-styled icons of popular apps including BPI, Google Drive, Canva, YouTube, Facebook, Grab, Gmail, GCash, Mobile Legends, Disney+, Zoom, BDO, Netflix, and Instagram. The top left features the text "UNBOX DIARIES / ARTICLES" and social media handles are listed at the bottom.

Because hardware is only half the story…

Just a few weeks ago, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro came into our studio to get the full Unbox Diaries treatment: benchmarks, camera tests, and everything in between. Considering the Mate Series had been absent from the Philippine scene for nearly three years, this comeback deserved special attention.

As expected, HUAWEI delivered on where it has always excelled. From the premium fit and finish to the triple true-to-color camera system, the Mate 80 Pro feels every bit like a flagship device.

Whether you’re shooting under the intense afternoon sun or in less than ideal dimly lit conditions, the cameras continue to deliver.

Hell, even performance received a noticeable boost thanks to the new Kirin 9030 Pro chipset. Sure, it trails a bit behind industry leaders in raw benchmark numbers, but the combination of 16GB of RAM, 512GB of internal storage, and HUAWEI’s SuperCool Dual Phase Change Heat Dissipation system puts the Mate 80 Pro right up there with today’s flagship devices.

Of course, no smartphone is made perfect. If it were, people would take ages to upgrade and manufacturers would no longer have the drive to introduce new technologies. Every device has its own strengths and compromises, and for HUAWEI, software has historically been one of their biggest challenges.

That’s exactly why the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is more than just a return to the Filipino consciousness, it’s an important step forward.

EMUI 15 itself has been consistent in how it improves. It remains polished, intuitive, and refreshingly free from bloatware while still continuing to introduce new features that make everyday life easier to bear.

But in all of these, the bigger story is HUAWEI’s AppGallery and how far it has evolved over the years.

A close-up shot of a person holding a gold-trimmed smartphone showing the Huawei AppGallery home screen. The interface displays "Featured" and "New apps we love" categories with various app icons. A finger is near the bottom edge of the screen, and a wooden table surface is visible in the background.

The perception of the AppGallery having a limited app selection has already become a thing of the past. In fact, in just under a decade, the AppGallery has grown to become the third largest app store globally. And it’s not just filled with janky copies of the most popular apps, it’s actually the real deal.

But hey, talk is cheap. So, to show you just how far HUAWEI’s AppGallery has come, we’ll discuss how the AppGallery shines in three key aspects: Productivity, Entertainment, and Communication.

Your Mobile Workstation

People from various professions, ages, and walks of life would agree that smartphones nowadays perform as more than just compact pieces of tech that you can watch movies or play games with. They have become an integral part of our daily lives and losing one can mean the difference between a missed opportunity and a completed milestone.

No one understands this better than HUAWEI. In fact, the company has spent years cultivating  a reputation as a productivity workhorse. Its MatePad series is one of the best, if not the best, productivity-focused tablet lines. Going so far as to include a desktop version of WPS Office.

Now, let me be clear, WPS Office is a reliable and intuitive office suite for writing documents, creating presentations, and managing spreadsheets. But in today’s environment, cloud-based apps are where it’s at. Clients and professors all prefer using Google Docs because of how easy it is to collaborate.

A close-up of a smartphone held in a person's left hand over a wooden table, displaying the Google Docs app interface. The screen shows a grid layout of recently opened files, including documents titled "Untitled document," "Templates and format," "Macbook Neo," and "ASUS PR draft." A light-blue floating action button with a plus sign is visible at the bottom right.

Teams can leave comments in real time, edit documents simultaneously, and access files across multiple devices without sending soft copies of every revised version back and forth.

Now, you must be wondering, “I thought HUAWEI devices didn’t have Google apps?”

Well, that’s a common misconception. Yes, native support for Google Mobile Services has been less than ideal but it’s 2026, and HUAWEI has since addressed that concern with the AppGallery.

Users can now directly install Google apps from the AppGallery. That includes Gmail, Google Chrome, the entire Google Workspace suite, and many more, all of which support multi-screen collaboration.

Work Hard, Play Harder

As the saying goes, “work hard, play hard.” After a long day at work or in school, it’s important to take the time to relax and unwind. Some find joy in exercising while others binge watch their favorite shows.

And in that sense, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is actually the perfect smartphone for watching or playing. Why? Because the 6.75-inch HUAWEI X-True LTPO OLED display makes every piece of content pop with vibrant colors and deep contrast, while the slim bezels make the content even more immersive.

The cherry on top? AI Gesture Control, which frees up your hands for eating or doing other stuff by allowing users to navigate content just by swiping in the air.

Speaking of content, looking for it has never been easier with the AppGallery. Just search for whatever platform you watch on, be it YouTube, Disney+, or Netflix, click install, and voila!

If you’re looking for a bit more action, gaming is where it’s at. On the hardware side, the Kirin 9030 Pro and the SuperCool Dual Phase Change Heat Dissipation system should be more than enough for the latest titles.

While on the software side, the AppGallery should supply you with the most popular titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and Genshin Impact.

Built for Every Conversation

If there is one thing that ties both professionals and students together, it’s communication.

We are living in an era where communication has evolved beyond the traditional call and text. It’s actually becoming rarer to see millennials, Gen Z, and even the newer generations use calls and texts in their daily lives.

That’s because apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, and WeChat offer more than just the essentials. These apps function like their own ecosystems, letting you do video calls, share photos and videos, and even work seamlessly with your favorite social media apps.

So, it’s no surprise that the AppGallery already supports these messaging apps. Even more professional ones like Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams can be found on the AppGallery.

Combine those apps with the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro’s 13 MP front-facing camera or the more impressive triple true-to-color camera system and you’ll be sure to always slay in your meetings at work or in school.

Plus, if you’re working as a creative or just want to spruce up your feed, the AppGallery also carries professional editing software like CapCut, Adobe Lightroom, and Canva to take your content to the next level.

The video editing timeline shows multi-layer tracks with yellow text blocks, a video preview featuring a colorful fountain display with a fire effect overlay, and an "AI UHD" export toggle at the top.

Support That Goes the Distance

There’s one important aspect that we weren’t able to cover in our review of the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro, the after-sales support.

The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is already designed to be durable, with its improved impact and bend resistance and the IP68/IP69 dust and water resistance ratings. Still, there’s only so much you can do.

Which is why having some extra insurance goes a long way. But insurance does cost money, and in this economy, every cent counts. Thankfully, HUAWEI throws in some extra safeguards for your peace of mind when buying your own Mate 80 Pro.

  • 24/7 Service Support – Having issues with your phone? Well, whether it’s 12 noon or 12 midnight, you can use the HUAWEI App’s Live Chat that features both a ChatBot and human agents. You can also message the HUAWEI Mobile (PH) Facebook Messenger account. And if that doesn’t work, try calling their toll-free hotline support: PLDT/Smart (1800-1853-5353) and Globe (1800-8739-5227) subscribers.
  • Accidental Damage Protection – If your issue is more on the physical side, HUAWEI offers a 1 year 1-time accidental damage protection, free of charge. But if the damaged part includes the mainboard, front cover, rear cover, or the camera, HUAWEI charges a service fee of ₱1,299.
  • Complimentary Screen Protector Replacements – For 3 years, you can avail of 6 complimentary screen protector installations at no expense to you, the user.
  • 1-time Free Battery Replacement within 3 years – Aside from the screen, the other biggest expense in smartphone ownership is the battery. While manufacturers continue to work on solutions to slow battery aging, it’s still an ongoing endeavor, which is why HUAWEI graciously offers a 3 year 1-time free battery replacement for batteries with a health of under 80%.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the Mate 80 Pro isn’t just another notch in HUAWEI’s belt, it represents a new era, not just for the company’s hardware but also for their software ecosystem, which the AppGallery clearly shows.

A hand holding the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro, showcasing the ergonomic design and the large "XMAGE" branded circular camera island. The back panel has a unique concentric ring pattern etched into the bronze finish.

Sure, skepticism around HUAWEI devices may still exist and opinions on that matter cannot be changed overnight, but the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro’s existence, as well as the AppGallery’s gains, is closing the gap between perception and reality with every new generation.

I’ll admit that even though I review phones and gadgets for a living, I was one of those HUAWEI skeptics, but daily driving the Mate 80 Pro for a short time changed my beliefs. With how much the AppGallery is evolving, there’s no doubt in my mind that in just a few years, HUAWEI could dominate the tech space.
