The rise of the global smartphone market continues in the second quarter of this year. As usual, the top three spots are occupied by the titans: Samsung, Apple, and Xiaomi, in that order too.
According to Canalys research, the global smartphone market grew by 12% in Q2 2024, compared to the shipments in Q2 2023. To be specific, Q2 2024 saw a total shipment of 288.9 million, much larger than the 258.2 million in Q2 2023.
Samsung led the pack with 53.5 million units, thanks to the solid high-end series and overhauled 5G A series. Apple held the second place with 45.6 million units due to its strong grip in North America and emerging markets in APAC.
Xiaomi came in third, followed by vivo, and Transsion, which includes Infinix, itel, and TECNO brands. Regardless of placements, these brands had positive earnings during that quarter. Even other brands also had a positive quarter with 96.2 million units over 84.6 million units year-over-year.
Canalys Senior Analyst Sanyam Chaurasia said that both Apple and Samsung will focus on solidifying their long-term strategies in mature markets. While other brands hope to get more in emerging markets. This seems to show the clear division between top-tier brands and new players in the smartphone industry.
