Leaks and breaches aren’t new concepts in the tech industry. In fact, most of what we report comes from leaks shared by reputable insiders. For Android phones, they’re a dime a dozen. And while Apple has also suffered its fair share of breaches, they have mostly been limited to photos or renders of upcoming iPhones.
That all changed with the publication of more than 200,000 internal files, making it one of the biggest leaks in Apple’s history.
How did it happen?
The massive leak originated from Tata Electronics after a ransomware attack carried out by the cybercriminal group “World Leaks.” Tata Electronics plays a key role in Apple’s multi-billion-dollar manufacturing expansion in India.
The stolen files included confidential schematics, component maps, and drop test photographs of the highly anticipated iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which were subsequently scattered across the dark web.
Why is it important?
Unlike your run of the mill leak, which is usually based solely on insider rumors or blurry supply chain photos, this breach contains more than 630GB of internal engineering documents. These documents reveal the exact layout of Apple’s logic boards for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series.
The schematics also provide a definitive look at Apple’s next generation architecture, including the A20 Pro chip, which is rumored to use TSMC’s cutting edge 2nm process, as well as Apple’s C2 modem, codenamed “Ganymede.”
But perhaps the most damaging aspect of the leak is the six master files that clearly map hundreds of individual iPhone 18 Pro components directly to their respective manufacturers. As we all know, Apple is highly secretive about its supply chain and the companies that manufacture its parts. This leak strips away that anonymity and potentially exposes Apple’s suppliers to competitors and counterfeiters alike.
A critical blow to Apple’s India strategy
The breach could severely damage Apple’s trust in the Indian conglomerate Tata Group, which it tapped to diversify its manufacturing footprint outside China because of rising geopolitical tensions between China and the United States.
In fact, market researchers project that 26% of global iPhone shipments this year will come from India. That is a significant jump from just 6% a few years ago.
In response, Tata Electronics has tightened internal access to its sensitive computer networks and appointed a global cybersecurity firm to conduct a forensic audit. For its part, Apple is also conducting its own internal investigation to determine what can be done to prevent this kind of breach from happening again.
