What if the heroes lose before the game even starts?
Blizzard has announced Diablo 5 for Spring 2029, and it is taking the series in a very different direction.
Revealed during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, the game is set 100 years after Mephisto’s defeat in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. By then, Diablo, the Lord of Terror, has already won.
Instead of fighting to prevent Sanctuary’s destruction, players will enter a world that has already fallen.
Diablo has won
Blizzard says the story will focus on what heroes must become in a post-apocalyptic Sanctuary.
The company has not revealed much about the story yet, but more information on the game’s lore, classes and gameplay is expected during a dedicated Diablo 5 panel at BlizzCon.
A shorter wait this time
Diablo 5 could also arrive much faster than previous entries.
Diablo 2 to Diablo 3: 12 years
Diablo 3 to Diablo 4: 11 years
Diablo 4 to Diablo 5: 6 years
If Blizzard sticks to the 2029 target, Diablo 5 will have the shortest gap between mainline Diablo games.
That lines up with Blizzard’s earlier comments about wanting to release new Diablo games faster. The company previously said that over the next 30 years, it hopes the series can get new games out more quickly.
For now, the biggest details remain under wraps. But the setup is already clear: Diablo has won, Sanctuary is destroyed, and the next heroes have to build something from the ruins.
