MediaTek is preparing to expand its chipset portfolio in a big way, and while attention is already shifting toward its upcoming flagship silicon, a new leak suggests the company isn’t ignoring the upper mid-range segment either.
Later this year, MediaTek is expected to unveil the Dimensity 9600, a 2nm-based processor aimed squarely at flagship smartphones like the vivo X300 series and the OPPO Find X10 lineup. But alongside that, a new chipset has quietly entered the conversation: the Dimensity 8600.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the Dimensity 8600 is shaping up to be a major generational leap for MediaTek’s upper mid-range chips. The key highlight is its reported 3nm manufacturing process; a significant shift in both efficiency and performance compared to its predecessor.

For context, the current-generation Dimensity 8500 is built on a 4nm process and already powers a wide range of performance-focused smartphones, including the REDMI Turbo 5, POCO X8 Pro, HONOR Power 2, iQOO Z11, Motorola Edge 70 Pro, and OPPO K15 Pro. Moving to 3nm would mark one of the most substantial upgrades MediaTek has delivered in this segment, not just in terms of raw performance, but also power efficiency and thermal management.
The leak also suggests that several major smartphone brands including OPPO, vivo, Xiaomi, and HONOR are already testing devices powered by the Dimensity 8600. This early adoption indicates strong industry confidence in the chip even before its official debut.
Interestingly, some of these upcoming devices are rumored to feature batteries exceeding the 10,000mAh mark, pointing to a broader trend where high-performance mid-range phones are also doubling down on endurance.
One device already linked to the new chip is the HONOR Power 3, although details remain scarce. It’s also unclear whether successors to current Dimensity 8500-powered models such as potential upgrades to the REDMI Turbo, POCO X-series, or similar devices will transition to the new platform.
As it stands, the Dimensity 8600 appears to be more than just a routine refresh. With a 3nm process and architectural improvements on the table, MediaTek seems to be positioning it as a chip that could blur the line between mid-range and flagship performance.
If these early details hold up, the end of the year could see a new wave of smartphones that deliver near-flagship power without fully stepping into flagship pricing territory.
