Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone may offer a different software experience compared to standard iPhones. A new report suggests the device often referred to as the iPhone Fold could switch to an iPad-style interface when its inner display is unfolded.
According to reports, the larger internal screen will run a modified version of iOS that adapts to the bigger display. The interface is expected to resemble the layout used on the Apple iPad, allowing apps to appear side-by-side for improved multitasking.
iPad-like multitasking on a foldable iPhone
When opened, the iPhone Fold is said to display a tablet-like layout with two apps running simultaneously. Apple is also reportedly redesigning some of its core apps to include sidebar navigation, similar to what many iPad apps currently offer.
The idea is to make better use of the foldable screen and bring productivity features typically associated with tablets to the smartphone form factor.
Despite the iPad-inspired interface, the foldable device is still expected to run iOS instead of iPadOS, meaning it may not support full desktop-style multitasking or native iPad apps.
Tablet-like display size
Leaks also suggest the inner display of the foldable iPhone could be around 7.8 inches, roughly the size of a small tablet. The outer screen, meanwhile, would function like a regular iPhone display when the device is folded.
The larger aspect ratio reportedly close to 4:3, similar to iPads, could help apps scale more naturally and improve the experience for reading, browsing, and multitasking.
Apple’s first foldable still under development
The foldable iPhone is still part of Apple’s long-rumored move into the foldable phone market. While Apple has not officially confirmed the device, multiple reports suggest the company is developing a foldable design that blends smartphone portability with tablet-style functionality.
If the rumors are accurate, the iPhone Fold could introduce a new hybrid user experience that sits somewhere between an iPhone and an iPad.
