Samsung drove the final nail in the Samsung Messages coffin after the tech giant retires the messaging application in favor of Google Messages.

The former default messaging app for Samsung is finally going away for good as current and future Samsung devices have decided to use Google Messages from here on out. The tech giant has removed the app from the Google PlayStore but legacy devices that came pre-installed with the messaging app will still be able to use it.
In a report, a Samsung representative reiterated their commitment to the ongoing partnership with Google.
With the close collaboration between Google and Samsung, we have opted to migrate all services to Google Messages and are sunsetting Samsung Messages. Itβs no longer available in the PlayStore; however, those who chose to utilize Samsung Messages are still able to do so. We believe that the added functionality of RCS messaging on Google Messages creates an enhanced user experience for both Android-to-Android messaging and across platforms.
This move comes as no surprise, given Samsung’s direction towards a much more AI-focused future. Even now, Samsung’s Bixby was placed on the back burner as the S25 series comes powered by Google’s Gemini AI.
Is Bixby next on the chopping block?
