HUAWEI has reached another chapter with HarmonyOS Next, set to become the third major OS for mobile devices.
A quick FYI, HarmonyOS Next differs from HarmonyOS currently running on your HUAWEI devices. The former is designed for China releases while the latter is for global units.
But the official launch of HarmonyOS Next may change the situation in the coming months. For now, we’ll stick with what’s new and how it differs from Android.
HarmonyOS Next is an in-house operating system and totally independent of Android and Linux. That means, you can’t sideload Android apps on this one because it can’t recognize those APKs.
According to HUAWEI, its new software will power upcoming HUAWEI devices, ranging from smartphones and tablets to wearables. The brand developed the OS via OpenHarmony and it’s written in various programming languages, including C++, JavaScript, and Assembly.
HarmonyOS Next supports HUAWEI Ark compiler with HUAWEI Mobile Services and cloud functionality to various devices, and with following perks and changes:
- Support on 15,000 apps and services under the HarmonyOS Next ecosystem.
- New lockscreen and home screen visuals and options.
- AI features powered by system-level AI based on the Pangu large language model.
- 30% higher device fluency.
- 20% less power consumption.
- HUAWEI Share 2.0 with a notable speed of 1.2GB transfer rate in 8 seconds.
- Star Shield security architecture
HarmonyOS Next public beta version is now rolling out to HUAWEI Pura 70 Series, HUAWEI Pocket 2, and HUAWEI MatePad Pro 11 2024 in China. Its global rollout is yet to be determined.
