HONOR Magic 9 tipped to feature unique square selfie camera and 200MP rear sensor

HONOR Magic 9 tipped to feature unique square selfie camera and 200MP rear sensor.

HONOR may be giving selfie lovers a new angle with the Magic 9.

The HONOR Magic 9 may bring notable upgrades over the current HONOR Magic 8 series, with a new leak revealing details about its camera hardware, battery, and flagship features ahead of its expected October launch in China.

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, HONOR is currently testing multiple 200MP camera sensors for the Magic 9’s main camera. These include the 1/1.28-inch OmniVision OV52A/OV52B and the larger 1/1.12-inch OmniVision OVB0D sensor, both being evaluated as potential primary shooters for the final device.

For zoom photography, the prototype is said to feature a 64MP periscope telephoto camera using the OmniVision OV64D sensor with a 1/2-inch format. The same sensor was previously linked to the Magic 9 in an earlier leak.

That previous report also claimed the device could feature a 200MP camera paired with a 50MP ultra-wide lens, with the latest information further expanding on the camera setup currently being tested.

The front camera could be one of the Magic 9’s most unique features. HONOR is reportedly testing a 100MP OmniVision OVA0B selfie sensor measuring 1/1.8 inches. However, instead of outputting standard photos, the sensor is said to crop images into a 1:1 square aspect ratio, creating square selfies while reducing the final resolution and pixel size.

The leak surfaced shortly after reports suggested OPPO was developing Android’s first flagship with a square selfie camera, though HONOR may launch a similar feature first if it reaches production.

Beyond the cameras, previous leaks suggest the Magic 9 series may feature a compact 6.36-inch OLED display, Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, IP68/IP69 dust and water resistance, and a large 8,000mAh battery.

The report also mentions that ARRI could be collaborating with HONOR to improve video processing and cinematic video capabilities for the Magic 9 lineup.

The HONOR Magic 9 series is expected to debut in China around October, although specifications could still change as testing continues.
