Following a directive from the President to modernize the force, the PNP is embracing a tech-driven approach that is fundamentally changing how it fights crime, ensures accountability, and serves the public. The days of “traditional” policing are evolving, and a new era of “S.M.A.R.T.” law enforcement is dawning.
This isn’t a future vision; it’s happening now. Here’s how the PNP is leveraging science and technology to build a more credible, responsive, and effective police force.
The Triple Threat: Drones, Body Cams, and Forensics
The core of this modernization push is centered on three key technologies that are already being rolled out and integrated into daily operations:
- Drones: The PNP is reintroducing drone patrols to its surveillance capabilities, allowing officers to monitor streets and high-risk areas from the sky. This provides a new, strategic vantage point that enhances visibility and helps officers respond more effectively to situations on the ground.
- Body Cameras: To boost transparency and accountability, body-worn cameras are now in use, providing a live feed from the field. This not only protects the public but also ensures a verifiable record of police-civilian interactions.

From Human-Powered to AI-Driven
The PNP’s vision goes beyond just hardware. With a five-year plan for “S.M.A.R.T. (Secured Mobile Artificial Intelligence-Driven Real Time Technology) Policing,” the force is investing heavily in AI and data-driven solutions. This includes integrating AI with existing CCTV systems to instantly analyze footage and track suspects, such as being able to “single out” and find a red car in a matter of seconds.
Furthermore, the PNP is fortifying its digital infrastructure. To address the issue of disparate, non-interoperable systems, it has conceptualized the PNP One Network (PON). This exclusive, secure network aims to create a unified platform for communication and data sharing across all police units, making operations faster and more efficient while protecting sensitive information.
Combating Modern Crime
In a world where crime is increasingly moving online, the PNP is also adapting its strategies. The force is investing in its Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to better combat a rise in cybercrime and online scams. It’s also engaging in partnerships with platforms like TikTok to educate the public and curb online fraud and exploitation, demonstrating a proactive approach to modern threats.
