For reasons only known to HUAWEI, they have kept a lowkey direction in releasing new, more affordable phones in their stables. One addition to that stable is the HUAWEI Nova Y73, offering a slight improvement from the previous iteration, the Nova Y72.
First impressions? The Nova Y73 knows how to make one. The “Dynamic Plaid Texture” on the blue vLet’s start with the design. Given that the Y73 is just a rebranded version of the Enjoy 80, only made for the Global market, it stands to reason why it would carry-on the same design. But when compared to its predecessor, it introduces a whole new design language.
Doing away with the rectangular camera island in favor of a pill-shaped one, similar to what the iPhone 16 has now. The Y73 is offered in two colors, a classic black and a dynamic Blue with a plaid texture.
Looking at the front, you have a 6.67-inch HD+ IPS LCD display with support for a 90Hz refresh rate. It also provides a commendable 1000 nits peak brightness for outdoor visibility. While it is adequate for most day-to-day use, we would’ve loved to see it bumped up to an AMOLED panel or a bump in resolution.
Just like what we’ve seen in the Enjoy 80, HUAWEI chose to omit the specifics of the chipset, probably to cover the fact that the Y73 uses the almost 5 year, Kirin 710A processor. I guess it’s capable enough to run HUAWEI’s custom EMUI 12. Additionally, the Y73 is also paired with 8GB of RAM and a choice of either 128GB or 256GB of internal storage.
For all its faults and weaknesses, the Y73 isn’t built for performance, instead it’s built for endurance. Boasting a colossal 6620 mAh battery, HUAWEI claims that it can go for a full day plus more of local video playback and a day and a half of online video playback. Coupled that with a respectable 40W SuperCharge capability and you have yourself an endurance king.
There’s one more thing that caught our eye in the Y73, the inclusion of a programmable “X button” on the side. You can configure this button to gain access to frequently used apps, smart home controls via the included IR blaster, or even toggle instant functionalities like flashlight or calculator.
While the HUAWEI Nova Y73 might not be a spec-monster on paper, it does have its own set of quirks and features that make it useful for everyday use. Not to mention, the promise of a no-frills, dependable, and long-lasting device, makes up for its lack-luster specs.
