After over a decade of user requests, Instagram has finally released a native app for the iPad. The new app is not simply a blown-up version of the iPhone app; it’s a strategic overhaul designed for a larger screen and a different type of user engagement.

Reels-First Design & New Layouts

The new Instagram iPad app is built around a “Reels-first” experience. Upon opening the app, users will be directed to a full-screen Reels feed, reflecting the platform’s focus on short-form video. The interface takes advantage of the iPad’s larger display with multi-column layouts for a more efficient user experience.
- Messaging: The direct message interface now features a multi-column view, allowing users to see their inbox and current conversation simultaneously.
- Notifications: Notifications and other features are now visible in a sidebar, reducing the need for constant navigation.
A Highly-Requested Feature: The “Following” Tab
The new app introduces a highly-requested “Following” tab that gives users more control over their feed. This tab allows users to filter content by:
- Latest: A chronological feed of posts from accounts they follow.
- Friends: Content from accounts they follow who also follow them back.
- All: The standard algorithm-driven feed.
This new filtering system directly addresses a common critique of the algorithm-heavy main feed.
Why Now? A Strategic Move
The timing of the app’s release is no coincidence. While Instagram had previously stated the iPad market was not a priority, the move is seen as a clear play in the ongoing competition with TikTok. With its powerful hardware and large display, the iPad is an ideal device for creators. By providing a native app, Instagram is positioning itself as a primary destination for creators and consumers who want to engage with content on a bigger screen.
After 15 years, do you think the Instagram iPad app is a case of “too little, too late”?
