The iOS 18 Preview is now available but the first official build is ready by September 2024.
Want the latest features of iOS 18 now? You can do so by getting the iOS 18 developer beta. But keep in mind that this is still unstable and has many bugs. Better get the public beta once it’s out. If you can wait, get the official version in fall.
The prominent feature of the latest iOS is Apple Intelligence. This is an AI upgrade and serves as a core aspect of the new Siri and many other AI features on your iOS-powered devices.
Apple Intelligence works on the Safari browser, Messages, Mail, and Photos. It can also provide generative images for custom pictures. Any eligible devices can enjoy it without worrying about hardware.
Now, for the eligible devices, iOS 18 is expected to arrive on all devices that are already running iOS 17. These include:
- iPhone 15 Series
- iPhone 14 Series
- iPhone 13 Series
- iPhone 12 Series
- iPhone 11 Series
- iPhone XS and XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone SE, second and third generations
The iPadOS 18 features Apple Intelligence as well and is expected to land on:
- iPad Pro 2018 and later
- iPad Air 2019 and later
- iPad mini 2019 and later
- iPad 2020 and later
There are a few things worth mentioning for legacy model users. A report suggests that iPadOS 18 is unlikely to roll out for the sixth and seventh iPad models and first-gen 10.5” iPad Pro and 12.9” iPad Pro. On-device AI functions will require an M1 chipset or later.
Even though iOS 18 can work on older iPhones, many AI features won’t because they require compatible hardware. On-device AI features are dependent on the iPhone’s processor, not on the cloud.
