DXOMARK crowned the iPhone 16 Pro Max as the new number one on video performance, but it only landed fourth on the overall camera test.
Apple demonstrated the new camera innovations on the iPhone 16 Pro Max and DXOMARK seemed to agree and gave the device high scores, especially on video.
The DXOMARK total camera score of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is 157, putting it in fourth place in both global and ultra-premium rankings. The current number is still the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra with 163 points, followed by the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and HONOR Magic6 Pro with 158 points each.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max’s excellent scores are attributed to:
- Impressive video quality with very detailed and noise-free recordings even under low-light.
- Outstanding color performance with an extensive range of bright and vivid hues across images.
- Plenty of image editing options for personalized pictures.
- Incredibly accurate image preview.
- Zero shutter lag.
One notable downside of the phone’s camera is inconsistencies on its telephoto where some detail loss can happen within the 2x to 5x range. Perhaps a software update can fix it.
Despite being fourth in the rankings, the iPhone 16 Pro Max beat the HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra in the video department, with 159 points versus 148 of the other. The video test was conducted using 4K at 60 variable frame rate and Dolby Vision. Engineers reviewed over 2.5 hours of video in controlled settings.
The results were astonishing! When you record videos on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, you can expect consistent video exposure and color accuracy on every recording condition. The typical trade-off of texture and noise wouldn’t even bother you.
Shaky hands? No problem because the device’s camera has the best autofocus and stabilization in the smartphone market right now.
