The algorithm managing proper touch response on screen contacts has been blamed by users.
Experiencing some unusual tap and swipe issues on your iPhone 16 Pro? You’re not alone because many are suffering from them too. The weird unresponsiveness is currently observed on both iOS 18 and iOS 18.1.
On Reddit, the main thing from reports is the phone’s inability or failure to detect swipes and taps. This type of bug negatively impacts user functionality.
Right now, there’s no concrete explanation but here’s a theory: the palm rejection algorithm. It’s designed to differentiate finger and palm or wrist contact. With the iPhone 16 Pro having thinner bezel, it’s only necessary to enhance the algorithm.
But it looks like acting way too aggressive. The problem is more consistent around the screen’s edges, particularly around the new Camera Control. The algorithm may momentarily ignore touches around the edges after the other parts of the screen come in contact with your hand.
There are two odd things observed as well. The problem doesn’t seem to occur when the phone is locked, which means it’s not the hardware. Using a phone case also works to reduce the frequency of the bug.
As of now, it appears to be a software-related issue that Apple can surely fix with a patch.
