iPhone 17 Air looking to replace the Plus variant

Out with the old and in with the new.

In an effort to regain lost iPhone sales, Apple is reportedly axing the Plus variant of iPhones due to low demand from consumers. Instead, the iPhone Air will fill the gap between the base iPhone and the Pro and Pro Max series.

How thin is too thin?

As the name suggests, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the thinnest iPhone ever. However, the precise measurement of the device is still being contested, with report approximating the device’s profile at 5.5mm. For comparison, its closest competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is reportedly coming in at just 6.4mm thick.

We’ve previously mentioned in our S25 Edge article that thinner isn’t always better. It’ll definitely take an engineering miracle to properly fit a powerful chip and a usable battery capacity in a tight space while keeping the phone from thermal throttling.

Our first look at the iPhone 17 Air

A much more detailed and substantiated render of the iPhone 17 Air just surfaced with the camera layout being a standout feature of the device. The render corroborated previous claims of a horizontal camera island which features a single 48MP camera.

Under the hood, the 17 Air is expected to feature Apple’s next generation A19 chip, coupled with 8GB of memory, and the in-house network chip that Apple is debuting in the iPhone 16E. It is also expected to sport a large 6.6-inch OLED display with ProMotion technology.

Just like we previously mentioned, the 17 Air will be aimed squarely as a replacement to the Plus models, giving consumers more options to choose from.

Of course, as with any leak, take the information with a grain of salt until Apple teases or releases the device in its special events.
