The on-device AI features will require more memory from the iPhone 17.
iPhones don’t need incredibly massive memory, thanks to the optimized software and hardware. While many flagship Android smartphones have 16 GB or more, iPhone 15 Pro Max is sitting with just 8 GB of RAM.
However, a recent report suggests that Apple is heading toward a bigger memory on the iPhone 17. Unlike the iPhone 16 with just 8 GB of RAM, similar to its predecessor, the iPhone 17 has an upgraded 12 GB.
The reason isn’t apps or games but Apple Intelligence. AI features can run via cloud normally yet companies are now opting for on-device functionality. This choice demands capable processors and higher memory.
It’s the reason why Google chose to upgrade the memory of the Pixel 9 Series. From the 12 GB on the Pixel 8 Pro, the Pixel 9 Pro is equipped with 16 GB to accommodate its brand-new AI skills.
Previously, the iPhone 17 series has been reported with an upgraded selfie camera, twice MP compared to the iPhone 15.
There’s also the iPhone 17 Air that prioritizes design and aesthetics than performance, having its own identity in the series.
