Want the Best iPhone 18 Camera? You May Need the Pro Max.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max could get a camera feature that the smaller Pro won't have: a variable-aperture main camera.

Apple may reserve one of the biggest camera upgrades for its largest upcoming iPhone. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is reportedly the only model in the series that will get a variable-aperture main camera.

The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are expected to launch next month with the A20 Pro chipset, larger batteries, and upgraded cameras.

Variable aperture could be Pro Max exclusive

Tipster Ice Universe claims Apple could limit the variable-aperture camera to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The reason? The camera hardware reportedly requires more internal space, which the larger Pro Max chassis can accommodate.

No details about the aperture range have been revealed yet.

A variable-aperture camera can adjust the lens opening depending on shooting conditions, helping control light intake and potentially improving exposure and depth-of-field control.

Pro Max could be thicker and heavier

The exclusive camera hardware could be one reason for the Pro Max’s larger body.

Ice Universe previously claimed the iPhone 18 Pro Max will measure around 9mm thick and weigh 240 grams, making it slightly thicker and heavier than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple has done this before

This wouldn’t be Apple’s first Pro Max-only camera upgrade.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced a 5x tetraprism telephoto camera, while the iPhone 15 Pro had a 3x telephoto camera.

Apple later expanded the more advanced telephoto hardware to both Pro models.

For the iPhone 18 series, Apple could once again use the larger Pro Max to introduce a camera feature that doesn’t fit inside the smaller Pro.

Apple has not confirmed the variable-aperture camera or the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s camera specifications, so the details remain unofficial.
