We Might Not Have to Wait for the iPhone 19 to Get a Smaller Dynamic Island…

Emphasis on the “Might” …

A month ago, we made an article encouraging potential buyers to hold off on buying the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. We gave 4 new features that are rumored to appear on the upcoming 18 Pro/Pro Max. One of those features has long been a reported smaller dynamic island. Now, a new leak has surfaced showing alleged prototypes and third-party screen protectors that indeed show a smaller cutout.

Now, before we dive further, I’d just like to point out that these are still unsubstantiated claims, so continue to take it with a grain of salt. Although the sudden appearance of these prototypes does make the case for a smaller dynamic island stronger.

The 35% Reduction

Industry leakers such as “Ice Universe” and “Majin Bu” have speculated that the dynamic island could be up to 35% smaller than the one currently found in the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max. The driving force behind the massive reduction is the move to tuck the TrueDepth camera sensor, the one responsible for Face ID, beneath the screen.

That leaves Apple with just the front-facing camera, therefore making the dynamic island smaller than its previous iterations. Some might say that if Android phones have done it a long time ago, why couldn’t Apple? Well, in Apple’s defense, the TrueDepth sensor is quite complex technology. And you gotta admit, Face ID works so much better than its Android counterparts.

Is it Coming to the Whole Lineup?

Historically, newer features on an iPhone first get tested on Pro/Pro Max models. It’s a sort of early adopter, cutting-edge setup. However, leakers suggest that the move to a smaller dynamic island could be implemented across the whole iPhone 18 series.

If this proves to be true, this could unify the design language of the iPhone 18 series, especially as Apple prepares to introduce their first foldable alongside the 18 Pro this fall.

What This Means

For many, the dynamic island has always been a love it or hate it kind of feature. But a reduction of that size can feel like a win for many, especially those who use their phones for watching movies or playing games, and you won’t have to wait until 2027 to see it.
