Apple may already have its next three foldable iPhones planned, and the third-generation model could bring a surprisingly simple upgrade: larger screens.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is already mapping out a third-generation foldable iPhone that could launch as early as 2028. The report extends Apple’s rumored foldable roadmap beyond the first model expected this year and a second-generation version planned for 2027.
iPhone Ultra 3 could get bigger screens
The biggest change reportedly planned for the third-generation foldable is larger displays on both the inside and outside of the device.
Gurman did not provide specific screen sizes, but the upgrade would build on the displays currently expected for Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
The first model is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover display. If Apple follows through with the third-generation upgrade, both screens would become slightly larger.
This would be the first report detailing Apple’s plans for a third-generation foldable iPhone, pushing the company’s rumored foldable roadmap all the way into 2028.
Apple’s foldable roadmap could already span three generations
Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to arrive this year, reportedly bringing a major redesign and several technologies that have been rumored for some time.
The device is expected to feature an ultra-thin design, Touch ID instead of Face ID, Apple’s A20 chip, and the C2 modem. It is also widely rumored to carry the “iPhone Ultra” name.
Pricing is expected to start at around US$2,000 or higher, putting Apple’s first foldable firmly in ultra-premium territory.
Gurman says Apple has already planned beyond the first model, with a second-generation foldable expected in 2027 and a third-generation version potentially arriving in 2028.
iPhone Ultra 2 could keep the same displays
The second-generation model has reportedly already received approval for development.
According to Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, the iPhone Ultra 2 project has been formally approved and is likely to reuse the first-generation model’s display.
That means Apple may not significantly change the screen hardware for the second generation, before introducing larger displays with the third-generation model.
The iPhone Ultra 2 is expected to launch in fall 2027, alongside Apple’s 20th-anniversary iPhone.
