Let's talk chips!

Let’s talk chips! Not the snack kind, but the powerful brains inside our phones. If you’ve been following the latest tech buzz, you’ll know Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is making waves. This isn’t just a small upgrade; it’s a clever move that could redefine what we expect from high-performance phones that don’t empty our wallets, with exciting names like the POCO F7 and the upcoming Nothing Phone (3) ready to lead the charge.

You know how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powers today’s top-tier flagships? Well, the “8s” version is Qualcomm’s smart way of bringing near-flagship power to a wider audience, hitting that sweet spot between cutting-edge performance and a more approachable price. And from what we’re seeing in early tests, it looks like they’ve truly hit the mark!

Decoding the “8s Gen 4”

So, what exactly is this Snapdragon 8s Gen 4? Think of it as a cleverly designed chip built on a 4nm manufacturing process. While not the very latest 3nm of true flagships, 4nm is still incredibly efficient and powerful. What’s cool is its Kryo CPU, with a prime core that can hit speeds up to 3.2GHz. Qualcomm itself is touting a 31% boost in CPU performance and an impressive 49% jump in GPU performance compared to its predecessor. That’s a serious upgrade!

This chip’s architecture is designed to deliver a powerful punch without hiking up the price tag too much. For us Filipinos, that means getting serious value for money!

Recent benchmark tests, especially from the POCO F7 (already launched in some markets, including India, with a huge 7,550mAh battery in that region!), give us a clear picture.

In raw CPU power (think Geekbench scores), the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 in the POCO F7 is very competitive, almost playing tag with last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It might not always lead by a mile, but it definitely leaves older chips far behind. Against the absolute latest top-tier chip (like the Snapdragon 8 Elite), the 8s Gen 4 understandably trails slightly in peak numbers.

But here’s the really exciting part: the GPU performance, especially during long, demanding tasks. Benchmarks like 3DMark show that while its peak GPU scores might be a tad lower than the full flagships, its stability and sustained performance are incredibly impressive. It maintains high frame rates over longer gaming sessions, even coming very close to or outperforming some Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones in sustained scenarios. For us users, that means games that stay smooth longer and apps that don’t bog down even when pushed.

The simple takeaway on performance? The 8s Gen 4 is built for balance. It might not always win the sprint against the absolute best, but it’s a marathon runner that keeps its cool and performs reliably, even when you’re going full throttle.

Who’s Getting This Powerhouse?

The POCO F7 has officially launched in some regions, confirming the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 as its engine. This phone looks like a serious contender for folks who want flagship-level features without breaking the bank, especially with its rumored large battery and a gorgeous 120Hz OLED display.

Then there’s the highly anticipated Nothing Phone (3). Carl Pei, Nothing’s CEO, has already confirmed their next flagship will feature the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. This is a smart move for Nothing, allowing them to deliver significant performance upgrades over the Phone (2) while potentially keeping the price competitive. Leaks also suggest the Nothing Phone (3) will pack a larger 5,150mAh battery and faster 100W charging, alongside a redesigned Glyph Interface and Android 15 out of the box.

Other brands like iQOO, Redmi, and Xiaomi are also rumored to adopt this chip, showing Qualcomm’s clear strategy to populate the “premium affordable” segment with this capable silicon.

The Big Picture

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is a game-changer because it means Qualcomm is serious about bringing top-tier experiences to more people. Sure, it might skip a few ultra-premium features (like 8K video recording, which most of us don’t really use daily anyway!). But it brings essentials like Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and genuinely impressive on-device AI capabilities that make your phone smarter and more efficient.

For us consumers, this is fantastic news. It means you can get a powerful, efficient, and super-smooth smartphone experience without necessarily needing to splurge on the absolute most expensive flagship out there. Phones like the POCO F7 and Nothing Phone (3) are set to prove that you don’t need the “ultimate” chip to have an incredibly satisfying daily driver.

The competition for your next smartphone just got a whole lot more exciting, especially if you’re hunting for that sweet spot between performance and price!
