The new prototype by LG Display can stretch up to 18 inches without losing visual fidelity.
LG Display recently unveiled a new stretchable screen prototype with the highest elongation rate in the industry. Compared to most stretchable screen prototypes, the latest version from the South Korean tech firm is capable of transforming into any shape.
The flexible display has a base size of 12 inches with a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB color support. It can stretch up to 18 inches – a milestone!
Back in 2022, LG Display had a similar prototype that can stretch up to 20% of its original size. But the 2024 model can do it at 50%, thanks to new technologies like a special silicon material substrate and a new wiring design structure.
What about durability? Twist, stretch, and fold the prototype with confidence because of the micro-LED light source of up to 40 micrometers. This ensured repeated stretching of over 10,000 times.
The LG Display prototype is also ultra-thin and lightweight with a capacity of adhering to irregular surfaces, such as fabrics or the skin, giving it a wide range of application from electronics to fashion items.
LG isn’t the only one making strides in flexible display tech. A research team at the Institute for Basic Science in Korea demonstrated a flexible QLED screen. They integrated a semiconductor polymer to improve the screen’s stretchability, reaching up to 1.5 times its original size without negative impact to the quantum dots.
