HUAWEI is preparing to launch the MatePad Mini, a compact flagship tablet with leaked specs that position it as a direct competitor to Apple’s iPad mini. The device is expected to offer a premium experience, but its performance may not be a major leap.

Key Specs & Performance
- Processor: The tablet will reportedly feature the Kirin 9010 chipset. While not the very latest silicon from HUAWEI, the 9010 is a powerful, flagship-tier processor that provides a stable and efficient platform.
- Display: It is equipped with an 8.8-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1600p resolution. The screen is framed by remarkably slim 2.99mm bezels and features a punch-hole camera.
- Build: The MatePad Mini is incredibly thin at just 5.1mm and weighs approximately 255 grams, making it one of the most portable tablets on the market.
- Features: Leaks point to a base model with 12GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, and 66W wired fast charging. The tablet is also rumored to support 5G connectivity and the ability to make and receive calls, blurring the line between a tablet and a large phone.
A Strategy of Substance Over Speed
By choosing the Kirin 9010, HUAWEI is prioritizing a proven, stable platform over the latest technology, a strategy that could benefit the device’s overall efficiency and user experience. This focus on a slim build, a high-quality display, and a powerful-but-not-new chipset is a calculated move to create a highly specialized device for a niche market that values portability and premium media consumption above all else.
Would you use a tablet that has the ability to make and receive phone calls?
