The battle for mobile supremacy is heating up as Qualcomm and MediaTek unveil their latest flagship processors. With the launch of the Dimensity 9500 and the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the competition has never been closer.
The Core Differences

The main point of contention between the two chips is their core architecture. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 uses a revolutionary “All Big Core” design, a significant departure from the traditional mix of high-power and efficiency cores. For the first time, a MediaTek chipset has broken the 4GHz barrier, featuring a single ARM C1-Ultra core clocked at 4.21 GHz, three C1-Premium cores at 3.5 GHz, and four C1-Pro cores at 2.7 GHz. This design approach is a direct challenge to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which is expected to stick to a more conventional, but highly optimized, core layout.
Performance Benchmarks
Early leaked benchmarks show a tight race. The Dimensity 9500 has a slight edge in single-core performance, while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 appears to maintain a stronger lead in multi-core workloads. This suggests that the Dimensity may excel in specific, demanding tasks, while the Snapdragon offers more consistent, all-around performance. MediaTek claims their design delivers up to 32% faster single-core performance and 17% faster multi-core performance than last year’s Dimensity 9400. Even more impressive, the ultra core reportedly consumes up to 55% less power at its peak, and the chipset is 30% more efficient during multitasking, a major win for battery life.
Beyond the CPU
Both chips are pushing boundaries in other key areas:
- AI: Both processors feature a new NPU (Neural Processing Unit) with a significant focus on AI performance, including support for on-device generative AI and large language models.
- Gaming: Both Qualcomm and MediaTek are promising console-level gaming on mobile. The Dimensity 9500 boasts improved ray tracing performance and can interpolate frame rates up to 120 FPS.
- Connectivity: Both chips support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard and are pushing for faster, more efficient 5G connectivity.
The Verdict
While the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is poised to be the most popular choice for global flagships, the Dimensity 9500 has proven it’s a serious contender. Its aggressive core design and impressive performance put it in a prime position to challenge Qualcomm’s dominance and offer consumers a powerful alternative.
The Dimensity 9500 claims to support 120fps ray tracing in games. Does this feature convince you to prefer it over the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5?
