Dimensity 9600: MediaTek’s First Dual Prime-Core Chip Could Change the Game

According to a leak from Digital Chat Station, the Dimensity 9600 will be built on TSMC’s 2nm N2P process, signaling a significant leap in manufacturing technology. However, the bigger change lies in how the chip is structured internally.

The processor is rumored to adopt a 2+3+3 CPU layout, consisting of two prime cores and six high-performance cores. If accurate, this would mark the first time the Dimensity 9-series moves to a dual prime-core configuration.

For comparison, the previous-generation Dimensity 9500 uses a more traditional setup:

  • One ARM C1-Ultra core clocked at 4.21GHz for peak performance
  • Three ARM C1-Premium cores at 3.5GHz for sustained workloads
  • Four ARM C1-Pro cores at 2.7GHz focused on efficiency

The new dual prime-core design in the Dimensity 9600 is reportedly referred to internally as “Canyon.”

On paper, this updated configuration should better handle demanding workloads, particularly as AI-driven tasks become more complex. Combined with the 2nm process, the chip is expected to deliver a noticeable performance boost over its predecessor.

Graphics performance is also set for an upgrade. The Dimensity 9600 is said to feature a new GPU with neural network shader technology, aimed at improving coordination between the GPU and NPU. This tighter integration could lead to lower power consumption while maintaining smoother performance.

Competition in this space is also evolving. Qualcomm is rumored to be working on a similar approach with its Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, which may also adopt a 2+3+3 CPU layout. The difference lies in execution. Qualcomm is expected to use its in-house Oryon cores, while MediaTek will rely on ARM’s upcoming Cortex-C2 series cores.

With both companies moving toward similar architectural strategies, the next generation of flagship chips could come down to optimization rather than raw design. The Dimensity 9600, however, is clearly shaping up to be one of MediaTek’s most ambitious entries yet.
