The latest market share data from Canalys reveals a dynamic landscape for the global smartphone chipset market in Q3 2024. While MediaTek maintained its position as the leading chipset supplier in terms of unit shipments, Apple secured the top spot in terms of revenue. However, the most impressive performance came from HUAWEI’s HiSilicon, which experienced a staggering 211% year-over-year growth.
MediaTek’s Dominance and Qualcomm’s Strong Showing
MediaTek shipped an estimated 119 million chipsets in Q3 2024, generating $26 billion in revenue. Despite a slight decline compared to the previous year, MediaTek’s dominance in the budget and mid-range segments remains strong.
Qualcomm, on the other hand, shipped fewer units (76 million) but generated higher revenue ($38 billion) thanks to its premium-tier Snapdragon processors.
Apple’s Premium Strategy Pays Off
Apple’s exclusive use of its in-house A-series chips in iPhones and iPads has propelled the company to the top spot in terms of revenue. With a limited product lineup and higher average selling prices, Apple’s strategy of maximizing profit margins has proven highly effective.
HUAWEI’s Resilience Amidst Challenges
Despite facing significant challenges due to US trade restrictions, HUAWEI’s HiSilicon division has demonstrated remarkable resilience. With a 211% year-over-year growth, HiSilicon has emerged as a major player in the Chinese smartphone market.
While the absolute number of chipsets shipped by HiSilicon (8 million) is relatively small compared to other vendors, its impressive growth rate highlights the company’s ability to innovate and adapt in the face of adversity.
