Meta launches “Edits” app to rival CapCut amid TikTok ban controversy

The recent ban on TikTok in the US wasn’t the only shake-up in the tech space—ByteDance’s popular video editing app, CapCut, was also pulled from the market. Wasting no time, Meta has stepped in with its own solution: a new video editing app for creators, aptly named Edits.

Currently available for pre-order on the US App Store, Edits is set to launch next month, with an Android version confirmed by Instagram head Adam Mosseri as “coming soon.”

What Makes Edits a Game-Changer?

Edits is designed to empower creators with tools for producing high-quality vertical videos, which can be shared across any platform. When posted on Instagram, the app integrates with Instagram Reels to provide real-time performance insights, such as engagement metrics.

Key features include:

  • AI Animation Tools: Bring static images to life with built-in AI technology.
  • Professional Editing Tools: Green screen effects, video overlays, caption generation, and voiceovers.
  • Inspiration Tab: Discover creative ideas and trends directly within the app.
  • Camera Customization: Adjust resolution, framerate, dynamic range, flash, and zoom for tailored video capture.
  • Collaboration Options: Share and collaborate on video drafts with other creators.

Meta’s Strategic Move

The launch of Edits is a clear attempt to capitalize on the void left by CapCut’s removal, positioning Meta as a dominant player in the creator economy. With powerful editing tools and seamless integration with Instagram, Edits is poised to become a go-to app for content creators.
