Generative AI appears to be at the center of Netflix’s upcoming video games.
Netflix previously shutdown some game studios that led to the layoff of many workers. Now, the popular streaming platform wants to invest in Generative AI for games. Not only it’ll risk more employees, but it’ll also serve as an insult to injury.
Mike Verdu, the Vice President at GenAI for Games at Netflix, announced on LinkedIn:
“GenAI is that next challenge. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about an opportunity in this industry since the 90s, when we saw a new game launch every few months that redefined what was possible. It was an incredible time to be making games as talented creators showed all of us what the future looked like. Guess what? We’re back to those days of seemingly unlimited potential and the rapid pace of innovation, which resulted in mind-blowing surprises for players every few months.”
Generative AI is primarily applicable on generating images of something being described. You could use one now on a popular messaging app.
AI surely delivers great efficiency in generating vast game worlds with intricate details, but solely depending on it has its own faults:
- Lack of human creative touch: A consequence of removing graphic artists, colorists, illustrators, and more.
- Too genetic content: A consequence of removing scriptwriters, writing assistants, editors, and more.
- Algorithmic bias: A consequence of removing diversity in the workplace or project.
We’re not saying Generative AI should be abolished or banned. Perhaps firms can encourage a balanced approach that employs both AI systems and skilled workers to avoid cascading negative effects in employment and the economy.
