In a move to reach a wider audience, Netflix introduced a cheaper ad-supported tier in 2022 for $7/CAD $6/GBP £5/EUR €6. This change comes alongside the removal of their previous cheapest ad-free plan (Basic), prompting users to choose between the new ad tier or the remaining ad-free options (Standard FHD: $15.50 and Premium 4K: $23.00).
The ad-supported plan has proven successful, attracting 40 million subscribers despite not being available in all regions yet. However, there are some trade-offs:
- Limited content: A small number of shows and movies are unavailable due to licensing restrictions.
- Targeted advertising: Ads will be shown, but not on Kids profiles or Netflix Games.
