NVIDIA seems preparing for a comeback in console gaming with MediaTek’s assistance on new chipsets.
When it comes to PC gaming, NVIDIA is the go-to GPU brand for many gamers. NVIDIA graphics cards are known for their top-tier performance and features, despite the price tag.
But the tech giant isn’t dominant in the console market, where AMD is typically the choice by console brands. One reason is it’s easier to outsource an APU than use two separate chipsets from different brands.
The winds may change soon, however, as NVIDIA and chipmaker MediaTek are rumored working on a new gaming processor for consoles. The two are also speculated to be developing gaming handhelds.
A tipster posted on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that MediaTek is creating a next-gen SoC for handheld consoles and it will utilize NVIDIA’s GPU IP. Some Chinese clients are interested in these upcoming chips too.
This isn’t the first time the two entered the rumor mill together. A previous rumor suggested that the two would offer new SoCs to match the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chipset. The SoCs would use TSMC’s 3nm process and be finalized by the third quarter of this year.
AI is likely the key focus on these upcoming processors. With new tech and applications, everyone should not be surprised to see them with a $300 price tag.
NVIDIA is still in the console gaming market thanks to Nintendo Switch. While the company successfully developed and launched its own Shield handheld lineup, Xbox and PlayStation have shifted to AMD and embraced the Zen and RDNA architectures for high-level gaming performance.
AMD isn’t going complacent with the release of Ryzen Z1 APU, specially designed for compact devices. Intel has also penetrated the market with Core Ultra chipsets.
Do you think NVIDIA can make a striking comeback?
