First introduced in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models, the pill-shaped Dynamic Island was meant to slowly phase out the now almost 8-year-old notch design that first debuted in the iPhone X. It changed the game of what the notch represents, transforming it from a static element in your display that housed the camera to a functional element that adapts to the content of your screen.

Now, Apple is once again refining the notch design by using what’s called metalens technology to shrink the dynamic island. It’s quite a complicated technology, but I’ll do my best to explain the difference.

What is metalens technology?

Currently, the camera lens beneath the display is composed of curved glass that refracts light in precise ways; nevertheless, it requires space to compensate for the curvature. Metalens, on the other hand, is a flat surface composed of minute patterns that refract light. This is why Apple may use this technology to further reduce the Dynamic Island’s footprint.

How does it play into Apple’s plans?

Now that we’ve gone over the difference between the two, what other advancements might this shift bring? A smaller Dynamic Island means that the user could take advantage of the extra screen space taken up by the older island design. It might also signal Apple’s step towards an in-display camera and Face ID setup.

In addition to the metalens technology, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is anticipated to have sloping edges, thinner bezels, and a body composition that is partially made of glass and aluminum.

What do you think? Do you prefer a smaller island, or are you comfortable with the current one?
