No Big Leap for This Year’s Dimensity 7000 Series, Just a Slight Upgrade…

The "MediaTek" logo is prominently displayed above each chip, and the words "UNBOX DIARIES / ARTICLES" appear in the top left corner under a warm, golden lighting effect.

Looks like we have to wait next year for the next big thing…

MediaTek just pulled the curtain on its latest addition to the Dimensity 7000 series of chips, but if you are expecting a big leap in performance, you might be looking in the wrong place.

That is because these chips are nothing more than a mid generation refresh rather than a completely new generation, and the names certainly reflect that. Meet the MediaTek Dimensity 7450 and the Dimensity 7450X.

Same Same But Different?

At the heart of both chipsets is still the same 4 nm CPU that you will find in last year’s Dimensity 7400. It still has four Cortex A78 performance cores that boost up to 2.6 GHz and four Cortex A55 efficiency cores. Even the graphics department retains the Mali G615 MC2 GPU, meaning performance on newer phones with this chipset will more or less be identical to last year’s 7400.

What’s Changed?

MediaTek opted to focus on the smaller details rather than give the new chips a performance boost. These include added features in areas such as AI, connectivity, and foldable support.

  1. Smarter NPU: With the help of MediaTek’s sixth generation NPU, the 7450 and 7450X see a 7 percent improvement in AI performance. But what does that mean? It means that phones using these chips can see slightly improved face detection and better computational photography, including noise reduction and HDR.
  2. Improved Connectivity: This is where the two new chips see the most improvement. Without going too much into detail, the new modem used in these chipsets is faster, more efficient, and recovers more quickly in dead zones. It also now supports Wi Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring better stability.
  3. The X Factor: You might be wondering what the X stands for. The X variant will mostly be used in flip style foldables because of optimizations tailored for that use. These include dedicated dual display support to manage external cover screens and internal main displays simultaneously.

Incremental, Not Incredible

You can look at MediaTek’s move from two perspectives. One is that it is a rehash of the same chip with small additions, or two, refinement over replacement. By focusing on the smaller details, MediaTek fills specific market gaps and addresses current needs rather than trying to break benchmark records.

If you are using a phone with a Dimensity 7400, there is no reason to upgrade for the processor alone. However, if you are coming from older 5G chips or upgrading from a 4G only chipset, then the 7450 and 7450X should be a worthwhile upgrade.
