Big news for Metro Manila commuters! Getting on the train just got easier. As of July 25, 2025, the MRT-3 line now accepts cashless payments. Soon, LRT-1 and LRT-2 will do the same. This means less waiting and faster trips for everyone.

A close-up shot shows a person's hand tapping a blue GCash card on a blue and silver turnstile scanner. The turnstile has a screen displaying "GCash" and a prompt to "Scan here," along with a "Tap here" label near the card reader. The turnstile is metallic, with a sign partially visible in the background indicating a "Fast Lane."

Officials say this new system is a “world first” because it accepts many kinds of payments at one gate.

How to pay now?

Forget buying tickets. You can now use:

  • Your Bank Cards: Just tap your Mastercard or Visa debit, credit, or prepaid card directly at the gate. Many major banks are included.
  • Your Smartphone/Wearable or E-wallet: Use your GCash app. You can make a “Commute QR” code to scan, or if you have an Android phone or a wearable like HUAWEI’s recent watches, just tap it if it has NFC.

It’s super easy! The system will take the highest fare (P28) first, then give you back the change when you tap out. You only pay for how far you travel.

Why this is great news

This change makes commuting much smoother:

  • Faster Entry: No more long lines for tickets or topping up cards.
  • Super Easy: Just tap or scan and go.
  • Modern Move: This helps Metro Manila’s public transport become more high-tech.

What’s next?

The government is also adding free Wi-Fi at all MRT-3 stations. This helps with cashless payments and keeps you connected. Soon, Wi-Fi will even be inside the trains!

Right now, students, seniors, and PWDs (persons with disabilities) still need to buy regular tickets to get discounts. But officials are working to add these discounts to the cashless system very soon.

With MRT-3 leading the way, and LRT joining soon, getting around Metro Manila will be much more convenient and modern!
