Nothing explores a future beyond Android and hardware: A Custom OS in the works?

While criticising the dominance of tech giants Google and Apple in the industry, Carl Pei, CEO and founder of Nothing, stated that the brand is exploring the idea of creating its own mobile operating system.

It is touted that this move aims to enhance the company’s role in the industry and develop a new way to generate revenue. Notably, Nothing phones operate on Google’s Android system, featuring a custom interface on top.

At TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 last week, Pei shared details of what a true Nothing OS could be. He described smartphones as essential tools for connecting with people and accessing information while criticising the dominance of Apple and Google in the industry.

The CEO noted that advancements in AI have made building a mobile operating system much easier and that this technology could provide a level of customisation not seen on current platforms.

Pei stated that there is an opportunity to make an impact on the software side by changing how people use their devices. He mentioned that it could also be a profitable venture.

As per the CEO, being a hardware company can be challenging due to issues like supply chain complexities, high capital expenditures, low margins, and the risks associated with achieving product-market fit.

In contrast, generating software revenue tends to offer higher margins and a more stable environment. However, he emphasised that the primary focus should still be on meeting consumer needs.
Pei chose not to comment when asked if the company plans to raise funds to develop the project.

It is worth noting that most smartphones currently use Android and iOS. Meanwhile, Huawei has replaced Android on some of its devices with its own HarmonyOS. However, to compete in this space, the London-based brand will need to create a similar app marketplace and get developers to support its platform with apps.
