Four Years of OS Upgrades
The S22 series launched on Android 12, and the arrival of Android 16/One UI 8 fulfills Samsung’s promise of four major OS updates. This commitment to longevity is now complete. Furthermore, the S22 series will continue to receive necessary security patches until sometime in 2026, completing its originally planned five-year support cycle.
The Bittersweet Pill
Despite the major OS version bump, the S22 series does not receive the full suite of new Galaxy AI features bundled with One UI 8. This marks a strategic omission by Samsung, differentiating the two-year-old flagship from newer models. Older devices are excluded from key new AI functionalities (like full Now Brief and advanced generative editing), even though the S23 FE, which uses similar hardware, has received a wider range of AI tools.
What S22 Users Are Gaining
The One UI 8 update still delivers several functional refinements based on Android 16: These include a redesigned, dynamic Lock Screen clock, enhanced integration across the Reminder and Calendar apps, and improvements to multitasking via enhanced split-screen views. General user experience is refined through updates to the Samsung Internet browser and Quick Share functionality.
