A Chapter Closes with Hasselblad

The five-year partnership between OnePlus and the legendary camera company Hasselblad has officially concluded. This collaboration, which began with the OnePlus 9 series, brought Hasselblad’s iconic color science and imaging expertise to the company’s flagship smartphones. The partnership was a strategic move that elevated their camera reputation, but according to the company’s CEO Pete Lau, the company’s “planned chapter” with Hasselblad is now complete.

The Rise of DetailMax Engine

On the right side, a small square frame with a rounded, white border zooms in on a single section of a leaf, showing its intricate details. The main text on the left reads, "Defining the Next Chapter of Clarity" and "Introducing the OnePlus DetailMax Engine." A small "f/3.4" is visible in the bottom left corner.

In a bold pivot, the company is now focused on its own proprietary camera system: the DetailMax Engine. This new system is built on a foundation of user feedback, with a primary goal of delivering clear, authentic, and realistic photos. The company states that the DetailMax Engine leverages advanced algorithms to produce images with “unmatched depth and realism,” moving away from the artificial enhancements common in computational photography. The new engine is expected to debut on the OnePlus 15.

OPPO’s Divergent Path

Interestingly, while the company moves on, its parent company OPPO is continuing its own partnership with Hasselblad. OPPO recently extended its collaboration, with plans to co-develop a next-generation mobile imaging system for the upcoming OPPO Find X9 series. This split in strategy within the same family of brands creates a compelling new dynamic, as each company pursues a distinct vision for mobile photography.

This change marks a significant turning point for the company. It’s no longer about borrowing a name but building its own identity. The success of the DetailMax Engine will determine whether this decision pays off, but for tech enthusiasts, it promises a fresh, exciting direction for the future of the company’s cameras.

The OnePlus-Hasselblad partnership has ended. Was it a success, or was it mostly a marketing gimmick?
