In February, OnePlus downplayed the need for lengthy software support. But just five months later, the company is reversing course. The upcoming Nord 4 boasts an impressive six years of security patches, exceeding their previous stance of “five years is enough.”
This news raises questions for existing flagships like the OnePlus 12, which currently have a five-year update window. Will they be bumped to six years as well? Time will tell if this extended support applies retroactively or only to future devices.
Nord 4 Edges Out Competitors with Longer Support & Metal Unibody
Regardless of the flagship situation, the Nord 4 stands out with its four major Android version updates, matching current flagships. This extended support goes a step further than Samsung’s Galaxy A55 and A35, making the Nord 4 a more attractive option for users prioritizing software longevity.
The Nord 4 also breaks the mold with a unique metal unibody design, a rarity in today’s world dominated by glass backs.OnePlus cites “durability, beauty, and strength” as key reasons for this choice. The company overcame 5G signal challenges by implementing 50% smaller antennas and strategically placed plastic sections for better signal transmission.
Durability is further emphasized by TÜV SÜD certification, guaranteeing smooth performance after a simulated 72 months of use. The Nord 4 is set to be officially unveiled on July 16th.
