The tech industry’s obsession with thinness is evident in OPPO’s latest marketing campaign. The company has been teasing the slim profile of its upcoming Find N5 foldable, directly comparing it to Apple devices like the iPhone 16 Pro Max and M4 iPad Pro.
Recent images reveal that the Find N5, when unfolded, is nearly half the thickness of the 8.25mm iPhone 16 Pro Max, appearing only slightly thicker than a USB-C port. Find series product manager Zhou Yibao claims the charging port’s dimensions are the main limitation in making it even thinner.
This aligns with OPPO’s bold claim that the Find N5 is the “world’s thinnest foldable,” surpassing the Honor Magic V3 (4.35mm unfolded). Reports indicate the Find N5 could be around 4mm thick—an impressive feat considering a USB-C port is only 2.6mm thick. To highlight its thinness, OPPO has compared the device to two Chinese yuan coins and four stacked ID cards. New images also suggest a smaller rear camera bump, adding to the sleek design.
While OPPO pushes boundaries with the Find N5, Apple is preparing its thinnest iPhone yet. According to industry insiders, the iPhone 17 Air, set to replace the “Plus” model, will boast a thickness of around 5.5mm at its slimmest point. Analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo, suggest this would surpass the iPhone 6’s 6.9mm record for the thinnest iPhone.
Both devices highlight the race toward thinner designs in the smartphone industry. The OPPO Find N5 is rumored to launch in February, with a rebranded OnePlus Open 2 version for the U.S. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 17 series in September.
