Qualcomm just dropped a fresh new chip that’s looking seriously interesting for the next wave of mid-range phones. We’re talking about the official launch of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 Mobile Platform, and from the looks of it, your next affordable smartphone might pack way more punch than you expect.
Think of the 7 Gen 4 as the glow-up for Qualcomm’s upper mid-range chips. It’s the successor to last year’s 7 Gen 3, and Qualcomm is signaling that they’ve made some solid improvements under the hood.
This new silicon is built on a sweet 4nm process (that’s tech speak for pretty efficient and powerful) by TSMC. Qualcomm has tweaked the engine with a new layout featuring a speedy prime core running up to 2.8GHz. What does that mean for you? Well, they’re claiming up to 27% faster CPU performance and up to 30% quicker graphics rendering compared to the last generation. So, your apps should open faster, and games should feel smoother โ always a win!
The Adreno GPU tucked inside is getting some love too, inheriting some tricks from the higher-end Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. This is great news for mobile gamers who want a solid experience without shelling out for a top-tier flagship.
AI Gets a Big Level Up
This is where the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 really starts to shine. Qualcomm is boasting a massive 65% jump in AI performance. This means the chip is much better at handling artificial intelligence tasks right on your phone. We’re talking support for things like on-device generative AI assistants and even running popular large language models (LLMs) without needing a constant cloud connection.
They’ve even brought Stable Diffusion โ that cool tech for generating images from text โ directly to the 7-series for the first time. Plus, expect smarter cameras thanks to AI helping out with things like autofocus, white balance, and exposure, making it easier to snap great pics and videos.
Smarter Cameras, Faster Connections
Speaking of cameras, this chip can handle some serious sensors, up to 200MP! It’s also capable of recording sharp 4K HDR video at 30fps. And for all you budding mobile videographers, they’ve added hardware-backed Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), a first for this tier, which should help smooth out shaky footage.
Keeping you connected, the 7 Gen 4 comes with the latest Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, plus a capable 5G modem for speedy downloads. They’ve even included their XPAN tech, which was previously an 8-series exclusive, for better audio range with your wireless earbuds around the house.
So, which phones will be rocking this new chip? Qualcomm says HONOR and vivo are among the first brands lined up, with new devices potentially launching as early as this month. Realme is also expected to jump on board soon.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 looks like a fantastic chip for the upper mid-range. It’s bringing some seriously impressive AI, gaming, and connectivity features down to a more accessible price point. If you’re in the market for a new phone that offers great performance without breaking the bank, keep an eye out for devices powered by this new silicon!
