No Roblox ban for the Philippines.

A few weeks ago, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda posted on his and DICT’s social media pages warnings about the popular gaming platform Roblox.

This came after a foiled attack on a school in Laguna that involved teens who were exposed to violent content by unknown foreign handlers through the gaming platform Roblox. Aside from that, there have also been reports of grooming and cyberbullying on the platform, which raised alarms within DICT.

DICT warned that if Roblox fails to cooperate and crack down on inappropriate content on the platform, it could face restrictions or worse, a nationwide ban. However, in a recent statement, DICT, along with other agencies like the CICC, announced that it is no longer considering a ban on the platform after a healthy and productive discussion with Roblox.

What Roblox Promised

In the meeting, Roblox reportedly pledged to fortify its child safety protocols, especially for the Philippine market. These include the following:

  • Enhanced AI Moderation: Using artificial intelligence, the system will better detect and block predatory language and inappropriate imagery in real time.
  • Strengthened Parental Controls: Parents now have more control over the content, interactions, and time spent by their children.
  • Direct Reporting Lines: Should there be illegal activities repeatedly flagged by the system, Roblox has established faster communication channels with local law enforcement to immediately act on the flagged activities.

A Win for the Community

The possibility of a ban on Roblox worried the Filipino gaming community, especially those who play the game. For them, Roblox is not just a game, it is a platform where they can freely express themselves.

In my opinion, DICT’s move to warn Roblox about possible child endangerment is not totally unfounded. It is rooted in improving the safety of every Filipino child and making the platform safe for everyone.

Vigilance Still Required

While Roblox has already promised improvements to its child safety protocols, bad actors will not disappear overnight. This brings up the shared responsibility of both the platform and parents in protecting children.

In the meantime, parents are encouraged to:

  1. Talk to their children about the risks of talking to strangers online.
  2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on accounts.
  3. Review privacy settings together to ensure they are set to the most restrictive levels for younger players.

Sure, dealing with things you do not fully understand may seem daunting at first, but with the help of the internet and your own kids, you can gradually learn the fundamentals needed to foster a safer digital playground.
