Samsung may have just launched the latest Galaxy S series, but work on its future silicon is already underway. A new report from Korea claims the company is developing the Exynos 2800, a next-generation chipset expected to debut in the Samsung Galaxy S28 lineup in 2028.

The recently released Samsung Galaxy S26 and Samsung Galaxy S26+ are powered by Samsung’s Exynos 2600 in select markets. Now, attention is already shifting to future chips, with the Exynos 2800 reportedly in active development.

The Exynos 2800 is rumored to be built on Samsung’s 2nm process (SF2P+), marking another step forward in semiconductor manufacturing. The company is said to be aiming to complete the chipset design and hand it over to its foundry within the year.

Once finalized, the foundry will begin producing multiple test samples, refining performance and efficiency across several iterations. Only after these stages will the chip move into mass production.

Internally, the Exynos 2800 is reportedly codenamed “Vanguard”, while its predecessor, the upcoming Exynos 2700, carries the codename “Ulysses.”

Samsung had originally planned to push toward a 1.4nm process by 2027, but that strategy has shifted. Instead of aggressively shrinking node sizes, the company is now prioritizing yield stabilization and process optimization. The current 2nm SF2P+ node is expected to serve as a transitional step until 1.4nm technology becomes viable around 2029.

According to industry sources, Samsung no longer sees it as practical to continue yearly process miniaturization at the same pace as before. Instead, the company is focusing on design technology co-optimization, which improves the synergy between chip design and manufacturing processes.

This approach is particularly important for newer process nodes, where technical maturity is still developing and yield improvements are more challenging.

The report also notes that development of the Exynos 2700 is progressing smoothly, partly because it also remains on a 2nm process, allowing Samsung to refine its manufacturing approach before moving further.

With the Exynos 2800, Samsung appears to be shifting its priorities from simply chasing smaller nodes to building more efficient and stable chip designs.
