Samsung isn’t slowing down when it comes to pushing foldable technology forward. A newly uncovered patent hints at a revolutionary design—one that allows a foldable smartphone to bend both inward and outward. This could be a game-changer, eliminating the need for a secondary cover display and making foldables even more versatile.
A 360-Degree Fold?
According to the patent details, Samsung is developing a device with a single flexible display that bends in two directions, thanks to an advanced hinge system. This design could allow users to flip the phone closed like a clamshell or fold it backward to create a traditional smartphone form without needing a separate outer screen.
The key to making this work? Samsung is refining its ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology and reinforcing it with layers of flexible polymers and adhesives. This would allow the screen to maintain durability while bending in multiple ways without creasing or breaking.
Another notable feature is a small exposed strip of display underneath the camera module when the device is folded. This could function as a quick-access screen for notifications, widgets, or even basic controls, removing the need to unfold the device for quick tasks.

Samsung isn’t just working on one new foldable concept—this is just the latest in a series of wild form factors the company has been exploring. At MWC 2025, Samsung Display showcased some crazy prototypes, including a foldable gaming handheld and a briefcase-style folding screen.
